Steve Biko Housing Association Are Pleased to Announce The Appointment Of Its Next Chief Executive Officer

Steve Biko Housing Association is pleased to announce the appointment of its next Chief Executive Officer,

Mr Abdul Malik-Ahad

Abdul takes up his position as Chief Executive Officer on 3rd November, 2025.  Abdul has a wealth of experience in both the social housing and community development sectors, and has a deep passion for racial justice; Abdul is well placed to lead Steve Biko Housing Association.

Abdul has previously held senior roles in some of the region’s largest housing providers including Your Housing Group, BAME housing association Tung Sing, and First Choice Homes. Alongside this, Abdul has held board positions for the Probation Service and the NHS. He is a founder and chair of Peshkar, a diverse arts organisation that engages disadvantaged young people through creative programmes.

The Chair of Steve Biko Housing Association Alison Navarro in welcoming Abdul said       “The Board and I are delighted to welcome Abdul as our new Chief Executive. Whilst we are sad to see the departure of our current Chief Executive, Tracey Gore, who has led Steve Biko Housing Association for over 20 years, we know Abdul - with the support of tenants, staff and the Board - will build on Tracey’s amazing legacy, both in running a very successful Black-led Housing Association and being a key voice and advocate on race and racism across Liverpool and the region.”

Abdul succeeds Tracey Gore who retires from the Association at the end of October, 2025.  Tracey can be seen giving a warm welcome to Abdul on the left.

After a remarkable career spanning over four decades, we announce the retirement of Tracey Gore, Director of Steve Biko Housing Association.

Tracey has been at the heart of the organisation since 2003, bringing with her a deep passion for social justice and community empowerment. She joined Steve Biko Housing Association after gaining invaluable experience at Neighbourhood Housing Services, Riverside Housing and Liverpool City Council and has become a powerful advocate for housing equality and anti-racism.

Under Tracey’s leadership, Steve Biko Housing Association has grown in strength and impact, remaining steadfast in its mission to provide high-quality homes and build communities without racism for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic people. Her drive and commitment have shaped both the strategic direction and the everyday work of the organisation.

Beyond her role at Steve Biko Housing Association, Tracey has contributed significantly to the wider housing and community sector. She has chaired and served on numerous boards and committees, including Amadudu Women’s Refuge, Kuumba Imani Millenium Centre and Crawford House Enterprise Partnership and strategically, the National Housing Federation’s Better Social Housing Review Race Task Group, BME National, Liverpool City Region Equalities in Housing Group, Liverpool Race Equality Taskforce, and the Liverpool City Region’s Strategic Housing Association group. Her influence has helped to push forward policies and practices that prioritise fairness, equity, and inclusion. Tracey is also a Board member of One Vision Housing and since 2022, she has also brought her expertise and community focus to Everton in the Community, where she has served as a valued board member.

Tracey’s retirement marks the end of an era—not only for Steve Biko Housing Association but for all the spaces where she has worked tirelessly to challenge inequality and uplift underrepresented voices. Her impact is far-reaching, and her legacy will continue to inspire our work and the work of many others in the sector.

Tracey will be leaving the organisation in September/October 2025, following the successful recruitment and appointment of her successor.

We offer Tracey our heartfelt thanks and best wishes as she embarks on a well-earned retirement. Her dedication, courage, and leadership will not be forgotten.

Black History Month: Honouring Legacy, Empowering Community

October is Black History Month in the UK, a time to celebrate the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black people throughout history and today. At Steve Biko Housing Association, this month holds deep meaning—not only because of our name, but because our work is rooted in the values of justice, dignity, and community empowerment.

Steve Bantu Biko (1946–1977) was a leading anti-apartheid activist and the founder of the Black Consciousness Movement in South Africa, which focused on empowering Black people and fostering their self-worth. After beginning his activism in student politics, he co-founded the South African Students' Organisation (SASO) and later the Black People's Convention. Biko was imprisoned multiple times for his activism and died in police custody in 1977 from brain injuries, leading to him being considered a martyr for the anti-apartheid movement.

Why Steve Biko?

Steve Bantu Biko’s legacy inspires us to challenge inequality and uplift voices that have been historically marginalised. Naming our housing association after him is a powerful reminder of our commitment to social justice and the belief that everyone deserves to live with dignity and pride.

Our Mission

We provide more than housing, we build communities. Our focus is on creating safe, inclusive, and affordable homes for people from all walks of life. We work closely with residents, local organisations, and partners to ensure that our services reflect the needs and aspirations of the communities we serve.

Looking Forward

Black History Month is not just about reflection it’s about action. As we honour the past, we also look to the future, continuing our work to build a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Steve Biko Housing Summer Tenants and Residents Project

On Thursday 24th July 2025 we held our finale activity to our community project thanks to a grant received from LCC ‘Communities Together Grant’. Prior to the day we delivered a 6-week gardening project. The event was held at Danube/Noel Street L8 , where we had a range of activities for children and adults of all ages, information stalls, music, and great cultural food and litter picking. The aim of the project was to bring diverse cultures of residents together.

A big thank you to the following organisations and people for attending on the day, and our Team Biko staff for making it happen. Fozia’s catering, Sanctuary project & wellbeing therapist, Blackburne House, Liverpool City Council environment team, Maxine Brown, and Ellis Eyo from Museums Liverpool, Writing on the Wall,  Tia (face-painter), Jackie Plastic Tactics making recycling art photo frames/dream catchers, and Osun arts for their fantastic African drumming class. A great day was had by all.
